There is nothing better than waking up in the morning to that first cup of coffee sitting by a campfire because you had a great nights sleep.
When I was young, we would go camping by pitching the tent (usually slept about 4) and then we rolled our sleeping bags out on the hard ground. Sometimes we slept on the picnic table when we ran out of room in the tent.
If you were really lucky, you had an old army style canvas cot to sleep on. This was a real luxury!
Today it is very different with the creation of the air mattress. The year of the caveman is no longer here.
This is great news for someone like me that is getting older and can really feel my age in my joints.
There are many types and sizes of camping air mattress to pick from for the campers comfort. These mattresses can be filled with air to any desired sleep level from soft to hard. These beds come in Twin size all the way up to King size.
In this article, we will talk about how to get the best camping air mattress so that you can wake up refreshed and ready for a day of exploring or hiking.
My goal is to show you what to look for, explain the different types and sizes, what features you can not live without, and narrow your search down to the highest rated best camping air mattresses available.
What am I looking for in the air mattress
As you grow older, you realize that there are some things that you just don’t skimp on and the quality of the camping air mattress you buy is one of them. Don’t go cheap, but go quality!
Obviously the better built the mattress that longer it will last. Make sure you look at the seam construction as well as the inter-working of the mattress. Just like when you pick out a mattress for your bedroom, you want to know how the mattress is constructed.
Today you don’t have to manually pump up your mattress. There are some mattresses now available that have internal air pumps or you can get one with an external air pump. These require electricity to run the pumps, but in today’s car or trucks most are coming with electrical plugins or you can use an external battery.
You want to make sure that the mattress you choose is lightweight enough to pack and carry on your family camping trips. Most will come in a storage bag to hold the mattress and accessories such as an external pump.
Always buy a mattress that is puncture proof or resistant. It should also be waterproof.
This helps with the occasional child that decides to jump on the mattress or sharp rock you didn’t see. I always put a tarp under my tent to add that extra layer of protection for sharp objects.
A good quality air mattress can be used for many other things other than you family camping trips. If you have overnight guest and don’t have enough guest beds, this air mattress can be easily setup and used to give your guest a comfortable nights sleep.
Type of air mattress
There are basically 2 type of camping air mattresses, raised or low profile.
The raised mattress are thicker and provide additional space between you and the ground. The low profile is lower, not as thick, and you can use one of these if sleeping closer to the ground does not bother you.
The most common camping air mattress you see today is the raised mattress. These mattresses will provide an experience more like you have in your own bedroom at home.
They can be as high as a normal bed and will be much easier to get in and out of. The disadvantage of this raised mattress is it will be more bulky, harder to store or pack, and weighs more.
The low profile mattress will be thinner to make them smaller and more compact. Campers like these mattresses because they are easily rolled up and packed for camping.
Even more lightweight and compact is the mattress pad. These can be used for hiking if that is what you plan to do.
The disadvantage of the low profile mattress is they are not as durable, but the ease of use and lightweight usually out weigh this disadvantage.
You can now get a memory foam air mattress for your comfort if that is of your liking. These work just like the ones you buy for your bedroom and traditional bed. And yes, these will cost you more for the added comfort.
Can’t live without features
Ideally, the built in air pump is a must for the high quality camping air mattress. These will come with a hand control unit that make the ease of use enjoyable.
You want to make sure you have heavy-duty seams and fabric. You can find this in the quality mattresses and puncture resistant and being waterproof is a must.
The more air chambers that the mattress has, the more comfortable you will be. This will better support your back and body. This is important if you don’t want to wake up hurting and aching.
Make sure the mattress does not leak. The added quality will ensure this. This is the last thing you want on you family camping trip. I experienced this as I woke up in the middle of the night looking like the inside of a taco on one of my grandsons cub scout camping trips. Not good!
Finally, make sure your air mattress comes with a tote bag and a good repair kit. Learn how to use the repair kit before going on your first camping trip with any air mattress.
What is your comfort worth to you?
When buying the camping air mattress, don’t go the cheap route as the added quality will pay dividends for you and you family.
